The 2008-09 biennium Zonta Club of Hilo has adopted Hale Ohana, the domestic abuse shelter on the East Side of Hawaii Island, for a two-year concentration of service. We've purchased 10 sturdy wooden dining chairs for the facility, collected toiletries and household items for the shelter. We did a 'hands-on' work project April '08 which earned the facility a $10,000 Weinberg grant. Click here. We also continue the "Hands Are Not for Hitting," project in preschools. The Rose Committee maintains the garden at Hilo Medical Center. Each year, the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation provides organizations like Zonta Club of Hilo the opportunity to give money to community groups that provide direct service to those in need. To qualify for the funds, though, an organization must do a hands-on community service project. Our 2008 Weinberg Project (April 26) at the shelter involved hanging drapes and rods, planting trees, installing a permanent clothesline, and filling more than 200 toiletry kits. We're also making "Restart" kits that contain a few basics, like dishes and flatware, for families faced with beginning again from scratch. 2008 Weinberg: Hale Ohana Abuse Shelter 2007 Weinberg: YWCA of Hilo Cleanup 2006 Weinberg: Neighborhood Place of Puna the Rose Committee 2008 Under the direction of Kathleen Nielsen, the Rose Committee has infused new life into the rose garden at Hilo Medical Center. Fighting insects, weeds and dead plants, Zontians are returning a spot of beauty for patients and visitors at the hospital.
